Open Mic Night Brings in North Texas Talent

By Kori Spencer

Denton, Texas has always been known for its “Mean Green” color scheme, it’s football team, and it’s going green movement, but recently Denton has been singing a different tune. With the rise in creatives living in Denton, it has truly sprouted into being one of North Texas’ best-kept secrets for musicians. A secret that is surly being let out of the bag.

“Denton’s music scene is so eclectic and unique.

The amount of opportunities Denton has for musicians

to express themselves is amazing and unlike any

college town I know.” says singer- songwriter

SoleilSoleilX, a Houston musician who got her start

singing in Denton while attending UNT.

Denton has grown its music footprint in the recent

years by adding many open mic nights around the city.

Most of them being held in Denton’s Square throughout

the week. Many gather to places like LSA, The Abby

Inn, and soon they will at J&J’s because of their new

basement venue for house shows.

“Denton music scene has opened my ears to the dopest sounds in the world period. Poetic Justice at UNT introduced me to some of the most talented artists alive” rapper and UNT alumni Jay Luse.

The opening of J&J’s new basement and the new live- streaming of LSA’s open mic night, many of these artists are getting some international exposure. When talking to local group Plato’s Theory, 3 sisters playing strings and singing covers and originals, about the rapidly changing Denton music scene and how it has impacted their career, the girls were all grateful for those in Denton.

“Everyone in Denton is so encouraging, supportive, and inspiring. Being surrounded by art and music all the time really draws out our creativity and love for music. We’re so grateful to live in this town”.

As more creatives come and “Make Denton Weird”, the music scene grows to create a sound hub in North Texas. Bringing back what was once a rite of passage for Denton artists, and continuing to create sweet music!
